What Is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics can sometimes be mindboggling and most people already know that braces straighten crooked teeth. But what they may not realize is that orthodontic treatment achieves more than beautiful smiles for most patients. Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for these problems is "malocclusion", which means "bad bite". The practice of orthodontics requires professional skill in the design, application, and control of corrective appliances to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and achieve facial balance.
When Should Treatment Begin?
Treatment begins at all ages but the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child visit an orthodontist by age seven whether referred by your primary dentist or not. Early treatment allows us to determine when a child's treatment should start for maximum improvement with the least amount of time and expense involved.
First Visit
Dr. Alan Wong will perform a preliminary orthodontic examination with you and your child. He will discuss his orthodontic concerns and the treatment he feels necessary to correct these problems. Please remember, as a new patient, your first consultation with Dr. Wong is free of charge. If the exam indicates treatment is needed, a complete set of records will be taken on your next visit. These are essential in confirming his diagnosis and completing your treatment plan. |
